JEFFERSON CITY — Former Democratic House Speaker Steve Gaw announced Friday he will run for Congress.

Gaw is seeking the Ninth Congressional District seat now held by Republican Kenny Hulshof, who announced earlier this week that he will forgo re-election to instead run for governor.

Gaw served in the Missouri House from 1993 until 2001. He was House speaker — the chamber’s top ranking position — from 1996 until he left office. Gaw also ran unsuccessfully for secretary of state in 2000.

He served on the Missouri Public Service Commission, which regulates public utilities, from 2001 until his term ended last year.
