COLUMBIA — Dr. William Crist, dean of the MU School of Medicine, is a candidate for the vice president for Health Affairs position at the University of Arizona, said Richard Gleba, director of external relations for MU School of Medicine.
Johnny Cruz, director of media relations for the University of Arizona said that Crist would be coming to the campus Thursday to speak at a public forum.
The vice president for Health Affairs is a newly created position at the University of Arizona. The university has a health science center in Tucson but is also expanding the college of medicine in Phoenix.
“This position would oversee the administration of all academic and medical services for the university,” Cruz said. He would also supervise the college of pharmacy, public health and nursing, the Arizona Cancer Center, all agreements with the University Medical Center, university physician's health care and UPH/Hospitals at Kino.
Crist graduated from the MU school of medicine in 1969. He became dean in 2000. Before becoming dean, Crist served as the chair of pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn. In addition, he led pediatric hematology and oncology teams at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, as well as at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
“Given Dr. Crist’s outstanding record of accomplishments throughout his career, it is not surprising that major institutions would be looking to him for leadership. He has recruited outstanding leaders and quality scientists in our departments and has worked collegially across all the life sciences,” Chancellor Brady Deaton said in a statement issued through Christian Basi of the MU News Bureau. “We certainly value his leadership at MU.”
Applicants interested in the vice president for Health Affairs position applied online through the human resources department at the University of Arizona.
Crist was not available for comment.
