Flags at half-staff to honor fallen soldier

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 | 11:48 a.m. CDT; updated 8:15 p.m. CDT, Tuesday, September 2, 2008

All flags at state buildings will be flown at half-staff to honor Steven Fitzmorris of Columbia who was killed in action in Iraq.

The announcement by Gov. Matt Blunt is in accordance with a law that took effect on Aug. 28 that requires the flying of flags at half-staff for one day whenever a Missouri resident is killed while serving in the military, a news release from the governor's office said.

Very nice that they are honoring him! The sad part is if Mr. Bush could get his head out of his ass this young man probably would have been able to live a lot longer! War is so bad...why do we keep repeating this cycle? a young man...I beg people out there in CoMo land...please..become informed about who you are voting for for president! If you're not voting....please do...we need every vote from everyone so that everyone's voice is made loud and clear and the nation may be able to move on from this sad injustice that has claimed so many great young and old people alike....just a thought...

Mr. Turner,
I am assuming you are old enough to remember 9-11. The 'sad injustice' I remember is the bombing of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the attempted attack on our White House. To not respond to such an attack is to invite our enemies to continue their goal of destroying this nation. If you have not studied how terrorist organizations are funded and operated, you probably have very limited understanding of the nature of terrorism. I am sixty years old. Something I learned a long time ago in my neighborhood is this: When a bully starts picking on you, you had better stand up for yourself. Bullies don't go away on school yards or neighborhoods until they think they are going to get their butt kicked if they pick on you again. Try mediating with someone who would cut a man's throat and video tape it. I wonder if you have seen that video. Have you studied the goals of fanatical Islam? Spc. Fitzmorris knew the enemy and gave his life to protect people like yourself from those who would silence any dissent, would enslave women, and who use both women and children as a shield to hide behind. The reason war is repeated is simple: There are people who are willing to kill in order to get what they want. Then there are people who are willing to fight to keep what they have. Oh, there also seems to be people who are willing to fight in order to prevent injustice. I do not agree with many of President Bush's policies. However, I am grateful that our country has not been attacked on our homeland since 9 -11. That, sir, has not been accomplished because of those who stand on corners carrying signs that say, "Honk if you want peace."

ahh yes, conservatism strikes again. In my humble 21 year old opinion I would just say that if we spent half the money we waste on educating, feeding & taking care of the world we could all live in a better society with a lot less other problem with the bully theory you present is that to beat up a bully you have to know how to fight...and our army isn't doing so hot if you pay attention to the war reports. They can say what they want about the surge but, the bottom line is that the media distorts stuff to please the people and they have for a long time...
