COLUMBIA - A Hickman High School student was arrested near the school on charges of marijuana possession with the intent to distribute on Thursday afternoon.

Akeem McKinney, 18, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. after Columbia Police officers stopped him for being a "person of interest" in recent thefts at Hickman, according to a Police Department news release. The officers saw McKinney riding a bicycle in the area while they were investigating the thefts.

When asked to stop and speak to the officers, McKinney jumped off his bike and fled on foot for three or four blocks. As the officers gave chase, he threw a bag of individually packaged marijuana, leading police to believe that McKinney had intended to sell it, the news release said..

McKinney was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute and felony charges of resisting arrest by fleeing. The incident remains under investigation, the news release said.
