LETTER: U.S. must solve financial crisis

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 | 5:26 p.m. CDT

I have not been to involved with this whole political whatever, because I find it frustrating, deceptive, full of lies and most of all depressing. I was recently laid off from my job, that's when I got the "wake-up call" that our economy really sucks and unfortunately the world is following in our footsteps. What are we as America going to do about it. Well we have come out with a "bail out plan", how long do we really expect it to last??? I mean the government is once again giving its largest money holders a way to continue doing exactly what it has been doing to get us into this mess.

If you look at this from a biology stand point, the United States is a huge tree, we have grown bigger than any other tree, in fact we have even cut off some of our branches and given them to "other trees"; China, India, Korea, and other countries, helping them to grow and prosper while the US workers loose jobs and loose a sense of purpose because we have cut off so many branches we don't have enough work to go around. Our financial district has become a rotten branch and we keep trying to keep it on the tree which just keeps killing the rest of the tree and contaminates the other trees. Why do we need this branch??? Yes, it is a very important part of our existence but it is going to kill us if we don't get rid of it. We as an economy, as a people, we cannot continue to grow if we are pumping all our energy and resources into something that is so diseased. We need to let it go and let a new branch grow. We need to stop giving our branches (our jobs) to other countries. So what it is cheaper to make things over seas, we need jobs here.

Why not tax foreign companies who come here to make their product? They tax us for going over there. Taxes i know are not the only remedy for this illness but we need to do something. Our "tree", our economy, our existence as we know it is going to die if we don't protect ourselves.

We need to get money back into the American citizens hands and homes, but it cannot just be a once in a while thing. We need to get our jobs back, we don't have an existence if we don't have a job. Each one of us needs a purpose, we need a reason to keep going, if we don't have the finances to get there, each one of us is going to fail, and if the bottom of the pyramid falls, it is only a matter of time before the top falls too.

So my question is "What are you going to do about it? Are you going to let OUR pyramid fall? Are you going to let our Tree DIE?"
