"Hola, buenos días, y bienvenido a Radio Adelante."
This is the first sentence listeners hear every Saturday morning on KOPN/89.5 FM for the new show Radio Adelante. As the host and a reporter for the show, I'm learning about the potential impact of a new radio program for the Latino community in mid-Missouri.
After speaking with many people in the Spanish-speaking community, I have learned that Radio Adelante is filling a gap by providing news from the perspective of the Latino community, as opposed to that of an outsider looking in. As far as we know, Radio Adelante is the only student-run Spanish-language radio news show in the Midwest.
Radio Adelante is broadcast completely in Spanish and brings the stories of local Latinos to the airwaves, along with national and international news that affects Missouri. On Saturday, we will air our third show with a story about the family of a National Guardsman, originally from Mexico, who has left his wife and young children for deployment in Kosovo; issues in the election that are affecting the Latino community; and a community calendar. Our reporters are in the community covering sports, business, the upcoming election, health issues and many more subjects that directly affect the Latino community.
All this effort is bringing to life the new incarnation of what was the bilingual magazine Adelante, published once a month and distributed with the Missourian and around mid-Missouri since 2000. The magazine is on hiatus, and Radio Adelante is our attempt to reach a broader audience than we could through the magazine.
Radio Adelante airs at 10 a.m. after La Hora Latina, the Spanish-language talk show and music program on KOPN, Columbia's community radio station. It's through KOPN's good graces — especially the enthusiasm of general manager David Owens — that we find ourselves on the airwaves. But a big "GRACIAS" also goes to the Radio Adelante team: Sara Shahriari, Sarah Horne, Mark Stanley and Katherine Reed from the Missourian.
We can't do the job without feedback, so if you have news or a story you would like a Radio Adelante reporter to cover or if you'd like to add an event to the community calendar, call 882-1939.
Now signing off, "Mi nombre es Carolina Escalera y esto es Radio Adelante, trayendote las noticias que son importantes para tí."
