University City officer dies after being shot

UNIVERSITY CITY — A suburban St. Louis police officer is dead after being shot in the popular University City Loop area.

The name of the officer has not been released. Police are searching for a suspect who was last seen in a gray 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Friday in University City's Loop area known for its trendy shops, restaurants and offices. One witness told KTVI-TV that the officer was sitting in his car when a man approached and shot him.

There is no known motive for the shooting, the latest of several violent incidents involving St. Louis area police officers this year.
