COLUMBIA — A workman was killed Monday afternoon when scaffolding collapsed on a construction site he was working on for the new Columbia Public Schools elementary school, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. Police responded to the incident at 5801 Arbor Pointe Parkway at 3:13 p.m. Monday, the release stated.

According to the release, Alan Hildebrand of Ashland, Ohio, was pronounced dead at University Hospital. The release said that two other workers on the site, Ryan Barnes of Columbia and Jeffrey Willman of Boonville, were also hospitalized with injuries, but their conditions are currently unknown. Other workmen were also taken to the hospital in personal vehicles to receive treatment for injuries inflicted by the collapse, the release said.

Work at the construction site has stopped. The cause of the scaffolding collapse is currently unknown; the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
