ST. LOUIS — Authorities identify the victim of a 13-vehicle pileup on Interstate 70 in eastern Missouri as a 50-year-old man from North Carolina.

The accident happened Tuesday on westbound I-70 in Warren County, about 50 miles west of St. Louis. Killed was Edwin Sargent of Mill Spring, N.C.

Authorities say Sargent was in one of two cars that hit an icy patch. Both vehicles went off the roadway and struck each other in the median. While Sargent and the other driver were exchanging information, two tractor-trailers hit the same patch of ice.

One of them went off the road and struck the two cars in the median, killing Sargent and injuring a 23-year-old St. Charles man.

Eventually, 13 vehicles were involved. All told, four people were hurt. The injuries are not believed to be serious.
