UNION — Two people are dead after a car headed the wrong way on Interstate 44 crashed head-on into another vehicle about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis.

Authorities said a vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes Thursday afternoon when it slammed into an oncoming car, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

The names of the victims have not been released, pending notification of one of their families. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says no other individuals were involved.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. east of St. Clair.
