COLUMBIA — Columbia police conducted an undercover investigation Thursday at a local motel in response to complaints of newspaper ads and an Internet site offering sexual acts for money and arrested five women on suspicion of prostitution, according to a department news release.

Investigators responded to the ads, which advertised "sex for sale" in Columbia and were placed in the classified section of local newspapers and on Craigslist, according to the release.

Police arranged to meet the suspects at a motel. Once the suspects offered sexual acts in exchange for money, police arrested them, according to the release.

Shehronda M. Washington, 30, Brittany M. Williams, 22, Tiffany L. Foster, 23, and Stephanie A. Brown, 23, all of Columbia, were arrested on suspicion of prostitution, according to the release.

Candra F. Garcia, 23, of Columbia was arrested on suspicion of prostitution and on two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Police said she brought her two children, ages 2 and 4, with her to the meeting, according to the release.
