FERGUSON — Parents from a suburban St. Louis school district say they're shocked but grateful no one was hurt after a handgun was found on a middle school student.

The unloaded .38-caliber weapon was found Wednesday morning on the student at Westview Middle School in the Riverview Gardens School District.

District officials received a call alerting them that the boy had a gun. The school's director of safety and an administrator went to the classroom and removed the boy. He did not have any bullets on him when he was taken out of class.

The boy was handed over to St. Louis County police, and district officials sent home a letter to parents alerting them of the incident.
