HARRISONVILLE — The oldest sister of a girl who was allegedly molested and impregnated four times by their father says she wants to see their mother face additional charges for allowing the abuse.
"I want her to get more charges," the 20-year-old said Thursday outside a western Missouri courthouse. "I want her to pay as much as my father. I don't want either of them to get away with a slap on the wrist."
Additional charges against the mother, who now faces only one count of endangering the welfare of a child, are a possibility, Cass County prosecutors said. But they declined to elaborate on what those charges would be and when they could come.
The 47-year-old mother, who is free on $10,000 bond, was allowed to miss a scheduled court appearance Thursday in which the case was set for a review. The public defender representing her, Angela Weatherford, appeared on her behalf.
Weatherford declined to make a comment. A preliminary hearing for the mother was set for March 5.
The woman's hearing will be on the same day as her husband's preliminary hearing, but prosecutors said their appearances will be separate.
The husband, also 47, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of an infant boy born in November 2006 and believed to have died months later after not receiving medical treatment for pneumonia. The baby's remains were found last month in a cooler on a rural property where the family once lived just outside of Harrisonville, a town of about 9,000 less than an hour south of Kansas City.
Two of the other babies the man allegedly fathered with the second-oldest of his daughters, now 19, are also dead. However, charges have not been filed in those cases.
The body of one of those babies was found in a different cooler last month on the rural Harrisonville property, while the other is believed to have been buried in Oklahoma, where the family briefly lived.
A surviving child — a 3-year-old boy — is in state custody.
The man is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, statutory rape and two counts each of incest and abandoning a corpse. He remains in the Cass County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
The daughter who birthed the babies was 13 when the alleged molestation started, family members and investigators have said.
The Associated Press is withholding the names of the suspects and other family members to protect the identity of the daughter, an alleged sexual assault victim.
