Nixon calls for end to unfunded mandates

JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Jay Nixon tells county officials the era of unfunded mandates "should come to a quiet close."

Many county commissioners say the state vastly underfunds counties when it requires jails to house state prisoners. They say the state covers about half the actual cost to counties.

Nixon spoke to hundreds of county officials at a conference Friday in Jefferson City. He said it would be a victory in this year's budget to not have the reimbursements cut.

County officials say they will push for higher reimbursement payments in future years.

Nixon also told county officials he has requested a major disaster declaration from the federal government for areas hit by a recent ice storm. He said this would relieve the burden on local governments.
