JEFFERSON CITY — A state panel that helps pick Missouri's appellate judges plans to use the same applicant pool to fill three openings on the state's Western District Court of Appeals.

For appellate judges and some urban trial courts, special nominating commissions select three finalists, with the governor picking one for the bench. Because the nominating panel plans to use the same pool for filling the three vacancies, it's possible that Gov. Jay Nixon will have only five choices for the three positions.

The nominating panel plans to select its first finalists for the Kansas City-based court on March 13. There also is one opening on the Eastern District Court of Appeals in St. Louis. The commission plans to wait to fill that opening until at least this summer.
