WILLARD — A southwest Missouri baby sitter has been charged with the death of a 9-month-old.

Fifty-three-year-old Brenda Jean Caringer of Willard turned herself into Willard police on Wednesday after she was charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 6 death of Lucas Theede-Bennett.

Greene County prosecutors also filed an alternative charge of child abuse resulting in death. Both crimes carry sentences of 10 to 30 years in prison.

Court records say she offered different accounts of what happened.

When she called 911, she told a dispatcher that the boy had fallen and hit his head while she was caring for him at her home. Later, she said she laid him down for a nap and found him not breathing when she went to check on him.

An autopsy showed he suffered from hemorrhages, a skull fracture and other injuries.
