KANSAS CITY — A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for beating his grandfather to death with a hammer in Kansas City after an argument about a car.

Justin Lowe said he was sorry before he was sentenced Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court for voluntary manslaughter in the December 2006 killing of 71-year-old James Lowe.

Prosecutors said the fatal attack happened after James Lowe refused to let his then 23-year-old grandson use his car to go to Iowa. Justin Lowe was on probation for robbery and was not allowed to leave the state.

After the killing, Justin Lowe took his grandfather's car and fled to a girlfriend's house in Iowa. Officers arrested him in the eastern Iowa town of Coralville.

Justin Lowe will be eligible for parole in about 10 years.
