Officers not charged in Cottleville bar fight

COTTLEVILLE — A St. Charles County prosecutor decided against charges for three off-duty police officers involved in a bar fight that left one man in intensive care.

Prosecutor Jack Banas said he reviewed a videotape of the incident and believes it was a case of self-defense. He also cited conflicting eyewitness reports.

The fight occurred Feb. 16 at Binford's Bar in Cottleville. Surveillance video shows a man starting a conversation with three off-duty officers — one from Hazelwood police and two from the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department.

The argument heated up and more people got involved, including 59-year-old Wally Nichols. He ended up in intensive care with a severe concussion and broken bones around his eye sockets.
