Man OK after fall from barge

Tuesday, March 17, 2009 | 10:12 a.m. CDT

ST. LOUIS — A barge worker is recovering after falling into the Mississippi River and spending about an hour in the chilly, murky water.

The man's name has not been released. He fell into the river late Monday north of St. Louis near a grain terminal.

Authorities say the man was wearing a life vest and fell off the barge just as it was getting ready to dock. Rescuers had a hard time getting to him because of debris in the water.

Eventually, the man was able to swim to the river bank on his own, despite a strong current. He collapsed on the bank, suffering from exposure and exhaustion.

He was taken to a hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery.
