SIKESTON — A southeast Missouri man is charged with injuring an 8-month-old who is hospitalized on life support.

The Sikeston Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday that 18-year-old Kevin Dixon of Sikeston faces one count each of child abuse and first-degree assault. The charges were filed Monday in Scott County.

The Southeast Missourian reported Dixon was caring for his girlfriend's child last week at a home in Sikeston when the baby was hurt. The child had a faint pulse but was not breathing when officers arrived at the scene.

The baby remains hospitalized in St. Louis in critical condition.

Hospital staff have determined the infant suffered injuries consistent with severe blunt force trauma.

Dixon is being held in the Scott County Jail on a $100,000 cash only bond.
