Masons strike restarts at Kansas City stadiums

KANSAS CITY — Members of the Cement Masons Local 518 are picketing at Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums after talks aimed at a contract agreement broke down.

The union had been negotiating with Builders Association of Greater Kansas City, which reached a tentative agreement with the carpenters' and ironworkers' unions on Tuesday. Members of the other unions are honoring the cement workers' strike.

Local business manager Kevin Sexton said Friday the union decided to go on strike again after realizing their demands would not be met. The Kansas City Star reported that members are also picketing at other locations in the area.

The contracts do not directly involve the $600 million upgrades under way at the Royals' and Chiefs' stadiums. But a prolonged strike could force the Chiefs to play home games in the upcoming season somewhere outside Arrowhead.
