LETTER: Health Connection should remain open

Monday, April 6, 2009 | 4:53 p.m. CDT

I encourage MU President Gary Forsee and Dean Richard Oliver to re-appraise their decision to terminate the programs and services provided at the Health Connection.

The Health Connection has provided superb assistance for many years to those interested in weight reduction, increasing mobility and overall improvement of health through exercising. The staff instructs members about the use of equipment available and, more importantly, routinely design specific programs for individuals with particular disabilities, limitations and so on to enhance their individual physical capabilities.

I am 74 years old and have been a member of the Health Connection for seven years. The personalized guidance and assistance by the staff has been extremely helpful for me following surgery for a knee joint replacement. I have gained greater strength and flexibility through the individualized program offered there. The Health Connection is simply not comparable to a normal gym.

It must be a challenging problem to reduce costs in the current economic situation. However, MU and Columbia have become the heath care center for mid-Missouri. The programs available to members in the community through the Health Connection mean a great deal to us who use the facility. A reduction in hours of availability, even increased cost of membership, would be preferable to termination of the programs available there. Such programs should be enhanced, supporting the goals of MU Health Care, rather than terminating a successful program that does exactly that.
