Kansas City police: Suspects in attempted theft foiled by mud

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 | 6:59 p.m. CDT

KANSAS CITY — Three people are in custody after Kansas City police say they tried to steal construction equipment but got stuck in the mud.

Police say the trio tried to take off with a backhoe from a construction site in northern Kansas City on Tuesday morning. A neighbor saw them and notified police.

When the suspects couldn't get the backhoe out of the mud, they drove off with the trailer that they had planned to use to carry off the equipment. Police tracked scuff marks left by the trailer and found it crashed into a parked car and almost into a house.

Using dogs and a police helicopter, police found the suspects in nearby woods and arrested them.
