WINFIELD — Authorities have identified the body found by mushroom hunters in Lincoln County as 28-year-old Jackie Noel of St. Louis.

The body was found about 7 p.m. Wednesday beneath trees off of Highway 79 north of Winfield. Lincoln County Sheriff's Lt. Andy Binder said Noel disappeared Sept. 21 after he and three others were allegedly involved in a theft at Dollar General store in Elsberry.

Police said the men led authorities on a chase along Highway 79 before the vehicle stopped and Noel got out and ran into the woods. The other three men were taken into custody.

Investigators suspect Noel died of a drug overdose.
