GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Rev. Vernon C. King, a nephew of Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 48.

The King family said in a statement Saturday that Vernon C. King died suddenly a day earlier in Greensboro, N.C. The family did not say how he died.

King was the youngest son of Martin Luther King Jr.'s only brother, A.D. King Sr. He was a graduate of Morehouse College, and he was the pastor of several churches in Georgia and North Carolina.

He was currently senior pastor of St. James Baptist Church in Greensboro.

He served on the boards of the King Center and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference board of directors, an organization his uncle helped found.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
