CLAYTON —  A St. Louis County woman has been charged with suffocating her infant child in 2008 and trying to suffocate her second baby in January.

Charges of second-degree murder, assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child were announced Tuesday against 20-year-old Sharnique Jones of Pine Lawn. She has been jailed on a $250,000 cash-only bond.

St. Louis County police said a 3-month-old child was intentionally suffocated on April 7, 2008, after Jones failed to provide it with adequate nutrition.

According to police, after Jones gave birth again in January, she also tried to suffocate her newborn. That incident led to a review of the first child's death.
