FARMINGTON — An eastern Missouri man has been sentenced to five years of probation, in part for killing a dog.

The sentence for 21-year-old Danny Contello of Doe Run was handed down Friday for animal abuse and an unrelated charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

As part of the probation, Contello was ordered not to have any new pets. If he violates probation, he could get up to six years in prison.

In December 2006, Contello killed another person's female boxer by beating the dog in the head with a shovel.
