JOPLIN — A 48-year-old Webb City man has been arrested on charges of stealing restaurant grease.

Joplin police said they observed Buddy J. Buzzard Wednesday morning checking grease tanks at several restaurants and pumping grease out of at least one into a tank on his truck.

Buzzard was confronted at a Fuddruckers and told the officer he worked for an area grease collection service, Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said.

But he couldn't provide documentation proving that, and the officer said the restaurant's disposal tank belonged to a different collection service.

Buzzard was arrested on misdemeanor charges of theft and not having the required driver's license.

Niess says grease thefts have increased in the past two years.
