NEVADA — A county in western Missouri is ready to open a new $8 million facility that includes a sheriff's office and jail.
Vernon County Sheriff Ron Peckman said the new facility will be able to house 86 inmates, compared with just 24 in the old jail.
A half-cent county law enforcement sales tax approved by voters paid for the facility.
Peckman said deputies are impressed, as the old jail lacked interview rooms and a place to segregate suspects.
The sheriff's office was hosting a $25 lock-in fundraiser on Saturday for residents interested in seeing the new building.
