The driver of this Mazda sedan was taken to University Hospital with neck injuries after his vehicle collided with an oncoming garbage truck on Thursday near Vandiver Mobile Home Park, Columbia Police Officer Ted Anderson said.

COLUMBIA — A man was taken to University Hospital with neck injuries Thursday after the vehicle he was driving collided with a city of Columbia garbage truck at about 2:45 p.m., Columbia Police Officer Ted Anderson said.

The garbage truck was headed west on Vandiver Drive between Westfall Drive and Parker Street when the driver of a Mazda sedan pulled out of the Vandiver Mobile Home Park in front of the truck, Anderson said.

Willie Bogan, who was driving east on Vandiver when the collision occurred, said the driver of the garbage truck tried to stop but couldn’t avoid hitting the sedan.

“The guy (in the Mazda) just ran right into him,” Bogan said.

No one else was hurt in the crash. Damage to the garbage truck was minor.

The driver, whose name was not released, will be cited for failure to yield from a private drive, Anderson said.
