SCOTT CITY — Authorities in southeast Missouri said a man shot and killed his estranged wife, then drove away and fatally shot himself.

Perry County deputies were called to a home in Scott City on Monday night by a girl who told them that her father had shot her mother. The victim, 36-year-old Stephanie Lynn Shuffit, died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies found 53-year-old John Albert Shuffit's body about 10 miles away, where officials think he shot himself with the same rifle that was used to kill his wife.

Sheriff Gary Schaaf said the couple couple in the process of getting a divorce. Three children, ages 11 through 16, were at home at the time of the shooting, but Schaaf said they were not threatened or harmed.
