POPLAR BLUFF — A southeast Missouri man is recovering after surgery for facial injuries suffered when he was struck by a low-hanging limb while boating.

The injuries to 49-year-old Hershel "Butch" Knuckles of Poplar Bluff occurred Saturday. He underwent surgery at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau and has been released from the hospital.

Authorities said Knuckles was on the Current River and turned the boat to head downriver when his face struck a large limb. He suffered skull and maxilla fractures, and a crushed cheek bone and orbital bone. His nose also had to be reconstructed.

A family source said the prognosis is good, and Knuckles is expected to make a full recovery.
