COLUMBIA— The MU graduate student who nearly drowned in a pool last week is improving at University Hospital.

Yirui Wei, 22, almost drowned Thursday night in the Tara Apartments pool, but her condition has improved from critical to serious, hospital spokeswoman Barbie Morgan said.

Wei was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool and was considered to be in critical condition until Tuesday morning.

According to previous Missourian reports, firefighters found Wei at approximately 9:20 p.m. Thursday. A Columbia Fire Department news release said she lost her breath after swimming for 45 minutes and was considered a new swimmer.
