JOPLIN — Missouri Southern State University officials said the university's summer enrollment is up about 4 percent when compared with last summer.

Spokesman Rod Surber said the university in Joplin has a summer enrollment of 1,850, an increase of 74 students over last summer's enrollment of 1,776.

Missouri Southern also reported a nearly 5 percent increase in 2009 spring enrollment compared with last year's figure. The number of students rose to 5,090 in 2009, up from 4,861 in the spring of 2008 .

Surber attributed the increase to the struggling economy, and he said more students are enrolling in summer classes while they're home from other schools.
