SPRINGFIELD — An effort is under way to document Civil War monuments and markers in southwest Missouri.

The project is led by Sally Bueno, a descendant of a Union soldier. She says many people don't realize the important role played by people from southwest Missouri in the war.

Bueno is a member of the group "Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War." She says the group plans to publish the names of the local Civil War monuments in a book later this year.
