LETTER: Rep. Mary Still calls for removal of committee chair

By REP. MARY STILL, 25th District State Representative
July 17, 2009 | 12:36 p.m. CDT

State Representative Mary Still's letter to the Speaker of the House, regarding State Representative Cynthia Davis.

Dear Mr. Speaker,

I respectfully request that you remove State Rep. Cynthia Davis as chair of the House Special Standing Committee on Children and Families following her recent statements regarding the plight of hungry children in our state. Rep. Davis' newsletter, which has been extensively reported in both the state and national media, listed the benefits of hunger for children, saying they "will not have obesity problems" and "that hunger can be a positive motivator." Her public statements indicate her indifference to children and a callousness that is not reflective of mainstream political thought in either party and certainly not in this state.

I am compelled to speak out against this line of thought as it is incorrect and punitive against children who, through no fault of their own, face challenging circumstances. I am not comfortable with her leadership on this important committee and I do not believe many Missourians in either party would feel our state is properly served by allowing such an individual to serve as chair of the committee.

Sincerely,

Mary Wynne Still

State Representative 25th District
