Missouri insurers: summer is peak burglary season

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 | 11:43 a.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY — Insurance companies are reminding Missourians that summer is peak season for burglaries as people take vacations and spend less time at home.

The Missouri Insurance Information Service says burglars typically enter through unlocked windows and doors. It advises homeowners to make sure they have adequate locks and to secure sliding glass doors.

The group also suggests installing a home security system or at least posting a security system sign or decal. Outdoor spotlights and neatly maintained lawns also help deter burglars.
