FULTON — A 32-year-old expectant father remains in the hospital after running into traffic to save a 2-year-old from an oncoming car.

James Pennell of Kingdom City suffered a spinal fracture and other injuries after the July 17 incident outside a restaurant in Fulton. The unaccompanied toddler left the restaurant while Pennell sat inside with his own family.

No charges have been filed against the 54-year-old van driver who struck Pennell.

Pennell will need multiple surgeries but is expected to recover after several months. The father of two and his wife are expecting a third child in several weeks.

Witnesses have set up a fund to help with his medical expenses through The Callaway Bank in Fulton.
