WICHITA, Kan. — A second usher at the church where abortion providerGeorge Tiller was killed said he heard a loud noise he thought was fireworks, saw Tiller on the floor and saw a man running from the church.
Keith Martin said he had the impression then that "George had been shot, and whoever shot him was running away."
Martin was the third witness called at Tuesday's preliminary hearing for Scott Roeder, the Kansas City man charged with gunning down Tiller on May 31. He's also charged with aggravated assault for threatening Martin and another usher.
Martin said he had seen Roeder at the church several times before, but didn't know who he was. He said he followed the alleged gunman, whom he identified as Roeder, out of the church. Martin said the gunman told him to move and threatened to shoot him before driving away.
