Keep an eye for mail from God

Imagine for a moment that your mailbox began to fill with letters from the Lord — written by the very hand of God himself. What would he say to you, and how would you react to his letters? God has a spiritual way of knowing what we need and who we are as a part of the body of Christ. His hope is to interact with his creation and share the gospel news of salvation. I can recall waiting to get a letter from the mailman. It did not matter what it was, but knowing it was for me made waiting well worth it. “… so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11 NIV

I found myself by the mailbox every day to see if my letter had arrived. Each time it did not come, I became frustrated, sad and disappointed with the hope that the next day my letter would be waiting for me. “When I am afraid, O Lord Almighty, I put my trust in you. I trust in God and am not afraid; I praise him for what he has promised. What can a mere human being do to me?" Psalms 56:3-4 The Good News Bible. Waiting was the hardest part. On one hand I was joyful that my letter was coming, but on the other hand I was miserable that it did not come when I wanted it to. However, the day my letter showed up in the mailbox, I could hear my mother saying, “Son, you’ve got mail.” The pain of waiting was finally over, and my strength and hope were restored. “I wait patiently for God to save me; I depend on him alone. He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated.” Psalms 62 1-2 The Good News Bible.

God desires to send us mail every day of our lives as we look to him to show us the blessings he has promised us through reading his holy word, the Bible.  “From the very beginning the Word was with God. Through him God made all things; not one thing in all creation was made without him. The Word was the source of life. The Word (his love letters) became a human being, and full of grace and truth, lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory which he received as the Father’s only son.” John 1: 2-4, 14 The Good News Bible. It is his spiritual mail that we should be waiting on and not the mail that comes from man. Although ordinary mail is important to us, we should not depend on it to bring us eternal happiness and daily devotional hope in a world that seems to be filled with doubt and despair. God’s word through his son, Jesus, will stand the test of time, but the words of man are just meaningless words that have the potential to harm and hurt us.

As a little boy I recall the phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I am sure you would agree we need to live by that statement today. We need not worry about man’s words if we are listening to what God is saying: (1) that he loves you, (2) that he forgives you and (3) that he sent his only begotten son into the world to save it from the evil one. So you see, God’s Word is a sure thing, and it comes alive in us when we believe in it, read it and work to live by the Word wholeheartedly. We can take comfort in the old Sunday school song that says, “I believe in the Word of God; every promise is true. I believe it; don’t you? I believe in the Word of God.” Yes, my dear friends, YOU’VE GOT MAIL.

Maybe today, God will remind you of his eternal love … of his strength to help you in your time of trouble as you serve his people ... of his joy at your success as a new believer … or of his readiness to forgive your shortcomings. Either way, his letter to you becomes a personal invitation to receive the free gift of salvation that comes no matter what you’ve done in the past. God is our everlasting postmaster general who says, “I will deliver my word to your soul, through a snow storm of life, or through Satan's harmful temptations; I will fill up the mailbox of your heart.”

In a very real sense, every one of us has received a love letter from God, his holy Word, the B-I-B-L-E. Here are two love letters that will serve as a practical reminder of God’s reassuring thoughts for you as you continue to offer a hand of service to those within your care and love. Think of him as a loving Father, offering comforting words to you, his child. I pray that you will find peace and encouragement as you read through these letters from the Lord written just for you.

My dear child,

Obedience is better than sacrifice. Be still. Be silent. Stand and see my salvation.  I am freeing you from all bondages. You will feel the release. There will be nothing standing between you and me. I will take control of your body and spirit. It is no longer you that lives, but I am living in you. Yield your spirit to me daily. I will fill you with my spirit as you yield yourself to me. I will manifest my power through you. Listen. I will speak clearly. My burden is light. Trust me to use you at the right time and in the right place. Rest in me. Enter into the rest I have for you. Stand still. You will hear me. You will obey. It is no longer you but I who am living in you. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

GOD Your Father

My dear child,

It is no longer you that lives, but it is I living in you. You are mine. You are my vessel. I am using you. Yield yourself to me daily. Seek me with your whole heart. I am in you. Be still and know that I am God. I will manifest my power through you as you yield your body to me. I will love through you. My love will flow through you to others. I am giving you the words to speak. Your compassion is my compassion. Your burdens are my burdens. Your desires are my desires. I will give you the desires of your heart as you delight in me. I love you. I am giving you joy. I am giving you peace. I am giving you love. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me.”  Psalm 23:4

GOD Your Father

Have you heard from him yet? Do you understand what he has said to you through these letters? Understanding comes from reading and hearing his Word, and living by it through faith. His letters of love have the power to change and keep your life on track. Always know that he loves you very much. He wants the best for you as you serve him, and encourage others to know he is the route to restoration, the truth during trials and the light that brightens the darkness of our land around the world.  So, check your spiritual mailbox today because YOU’VE GOT MAIL!

"To save the world from the evil one" would imply the enemy has a measure of control over the fate of humankind, when only God has that power. 1) God loves us, 2) God forgives us BECAUSE 3) He gave up his son, that all who believe in him would be able to find salvation. In reading the gospel, I realize the battle we wage against the enemy is more internal: he delights when we minimize our sinful nature, because it means we need Christ that much less. Thank you for your columns, and please keep up the good work - God bless.
