Marine from Winfield dies in Afghanistan

WINFIELD — The U.S. Department of Defense said a Marine from Winfield has died in fighting in Afghanistan.

The defense department said 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Patrick W. Schimmel died Sunday in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

He was one of three Marines assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C., who died in combat Sunday.
