NEW MADRID— Authorities are trying to learn the cause of death for a 16-year-old southeast Missouri high school football player who collapsed and died shortly after practice began.

New Madrid County Deputy Coroner Ralph Barnwell says Raymond Tindle collapsed at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, about four minutes after players for New Madrid County Central High took to the practice field. Barnwell says players were just completing stretching exercises in 78-degree weather when Tindle collapsed.

Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Tindle was pronounced dead at a hospital.

An autopsy was scheduled for later Wednesday. Barnwell says preliminary autopsy results could be available by Thursday.

Barnwell says Tindle had no known medical conditions.
