Shawn Hornbeck discusses Jaycee Dugard case

Friday, September 4, 2009 | 2:29 p.m. CDT

ST. LOUIS — If anybody knows what Jaycee Dugard is going through, it's Shawn Hornbeck.

The Missouri teenager spoke to People magazine, and to the CBS program "48 Hours Mystery" in an episode that airs Saturday. Calls from The Associated Press seeking an interview were not returned.

Hornbeck was 11 when he was kidnapped in 2002 near his home in Richwoods, Mo. He turned up alive in January 2007. His kidnapper, Michael Devlin, is now serving life in prison.

Dugard was also 11 when she disappeared 18 years ago. She was found alive last month. Her alleged kidnapper and his wife have pleaded not guilty to multiple counts.

Hornbeck told People that Jaycee didn't escape because she was brainwashed, just as he was. He says that for Dugard to heal, she must avoid dwelling on the past.
