JOPLIN — A Joplin man has died after being shot Sunday by a police officer who tried to pull him over for drunken driving.

The Joplin Police Department said 34-year-old David Bogard used mace on the officer who was attempting to detain him after a pursuit. Police said the officer had tried to pull Bogard over on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, but the suspect fled.

Bogard died Sunday night. The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
