Former Missouri state senator Smith apologizes for lies to FEC

ST. LOUIS — Missouri state Sen. Jeff Smith says he was "stupid and wrong" to conceal his involvement in coordinating a political attack against Russ Carnahan in a 2004 Democratic congressional primary.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday published a letter from Smith, who apologizes to fellow senators, family members and friends and those who lost faith in government.

Smith, of St. Louis, pleaded guilty last month to federal counts of obstruction of justice.

Smith approved a plan in 2004 to distribute negative campaign material against Carnahan using a supposedly independent campaign committee. After Carnahan complained to the Federal Election Commission, Smith submitted a false affidavit claiming no involvement in the attack.

Smith says he approved the attack to get an advantage in the campaign and then lied to preserve his political future.
