JEFFERSON CITY — A former Army officer from Rolla says he plans to run against U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson next year.

Tommy Sowers, 33, announced his candidacy Wednesday for the southeast Missouri congressional seat. Although his news release and Web site don't mention his party affiliation, a spokesman said Sowers will be running as a Democrat.

Emerson, a Republican, has held the seat since 1996.

Sowers is a former Army Special Forces officer whose tours of duty included two stints in Iraq. He currently teaches in the history and political science department at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla.
