LEXINGTON — A new monument devoted to Union soldiers will be dedicated later this month at a Civil War battlefield in western Missouri.

The monument at the site in Lexington features a brief description of Union efforts during the 1861 battle. It also bears a list of the federal units that took part, and a citation for a medal of honor recipient from an Illinois cavalry.

Democratic Rep. Ike Skelton, who lives in Lexington, is to speak during a dedication ceremony on Sept. 26. The monument was donated by the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War.
