In through the roof: Burglary at Joplin Walmart 'significant'

JOPLIN — Joplin Police Chief Lane Roberts says a thief who cut a hole in the roof a Walmart store got away with a "significant" amount of money.

Roberts wouldn't say exactly how much was taken, but said Tuesday's theft was one of the most significant property crimes in Joplin in recent years.

Police say the burglar gained entrance into the store's accounting room sometime between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Tuesday, while the store was open.

Roberts says little information is being released about the burglary because investigators don't want to divulge anything that only the criminal would know. He says surveillance tapes from the store have had limited value and police don't know if more than one person was involved.
