COLUMBIA — The school board is expected to vote on a proposed property purchase during its meeting Monday evening.

The district is expected to consider purchasing a 60,275 square foot property off of Paris Road to store food service products and house building services shops.

Currently, the school district owns property off of Van Horn Tavern Road, which is used for storage. The property is home to building services, such as the janitorial or maintenance departments, and is used to store products for the Nutritional Services Department, which is responsible for school lunches.

Because of limited space, the school district must store some of its food products with a private company located in Kansas City, chief operations officer Nick Boren wrote in an e-mail.

The district transports the products to Columbia as space becomes available. Boren said it costs the district approximately $12,000 a year for this storage.

The school district has been using the 17,996 square-foot space off Van Horn Tavern Road, for many years, but as a result of a growing school district and increasing enrollment more storage is needed, Boren said.

The proposal is to purchase a 60,275 foot property off Paris Road. With the purchase of the Paris Road property, all food service products could be stored in Columbia, and building services would be able to operate from one location.

The current building is cumbersome and inefficient for building services because there are groups scattered at different locations, Boren said. Both the carpenter shop and ground shop currently operate in different locations. Painters and locksmiths also work at these other two locations, resulting in 26 employees at different locations.

According to Boren, the new property would cost approximately $1,287,500 and was chosen because the size of the facility meets current district needs and allows room for growth.

The timing of the proposed purchase would allow for a budget-neutral transaction as a result of the sale of the existing Van Horn Tavern Road property, Boren.

The Van Horn Tavern Road property would be listed for sale by a real estate agent.

Also on the agenda are proposed curriculum changes for the Columbia School District.

The board is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the district's Administration Building, 1818 W. Worley St.
