JEFFERSON CITY — Gov. Jay Nixon has declared this week Earth Science Week.

The declaration is meant to remind the public that earth sciences such as geology are important to health, safety and welfare.

The week is sponsored by the American Geological Institute and the Division of Geology and Land Survey within the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

DNR officials will be talking to students in Missouri classrooms and at outdoor events. On Saturday, staff members from the geology and land survey division will speak at an event in Rolla.
